My Box of Ricecakes
Foamcore, Paper, Pastels
30" x 30”
2024
“My Box of Ricecakes” balances various emotions with the pressure to fit into cultural and societal standards and stereotypes. I photograph this piece using a performative approach: DIY rice cakes with a set alongside real rice cakes and oversized handmade chopsticks. The set symbolizes Korean culture, where the need to appear presentable and honor filial piety shapes my interactions, often boxing in my emotions shown through the box set. Covered by a floral lid, it reflects the masking of emotions, like mochi’s diverse flavors that still must look polished. Each rice cake is replaced by a miniature version of my face, each one with a unique, expression capturing my emotional range that is hidden away.

Hyperstimulation
Oil Pastel
29" x 46"
2024
A 29” x 46” cutout self-portrait captures the decay that results from endlessly indulging in consumerism. I use bold, almost harsh, oversaturated colors that swirl across the piece, with intention to grab attention and convey the intensity of overindulging in stimulation. The dotted hues in my eyes capture the intense overstimulation of daily consumerism—one eye almost completely swallowed by the harsh dots, symbolizing the mental toll. It’s as if constant consumption slowly erases your sense of self, and leaves a blue of who you once were. In contrast, I flip my lip to reveal my name etched on it—a reminder that, no matter how much we overindulge in a society obsessed with consumerism, our core identity remains intact.

Congruent
Plaster
15" x 9" x 18.5"
2024
This piece was a happy accident. It was initially designed as a single structure, with prisms stacked and connected through holes in the cardboard. But when the cardboard couldn’t support the plaster’s weight, it broke apart. Surprisingly, the fragments balanced on each other beautifully, creating an unplanned harmony. This unexpected result made me love the piece even more—it reflects the idea that disruption is sometimes needed to achieve balance. It symbolizes my life, where embracing all events, whether good or bad, leads to congruence.

In the Small Acts
Color Pencil
42" x 37"
2024
"In the Small Acts" is a mixed media piece celebrating the impact of my grandmother’s love through simple gestures. It captures her hands cutting my nails—a tradition she continues whenever she visits. This act, though small, has a lasting effect on me, extending from realistic depictions of our hands to abstract expressions. Our hands are rendered in colored pencil with realistic detail, but the wrists extend into abstract forms, showing that her love reaches beyond physical. My grandmother's hand is shaded in darker tones and harsher lines, with the rest of her form in purple and blue shapes with black cutouts, symbolizing the struggles she’s faced. Her pink sleeves reflect deep love where she passes it to me. My arm extends to vibrant in yellow, orange, and green patterns to symbolize youth and growth, like a young plant. Together, these hands capture a generational bond, blending realism and abstract color to reflect the strength of her love.

Early Life
Marker, Acrylic Paint, Clear PVC Sheet
15” x 20”
2023
"Early Life" is a layered piece capturing my childhood memories and what I remember of her when we were younger. With so many memories of my cousin, nostalgia washes over me, bringing back the bright feelings of play and discovery. I use primary colors to capture the freshness of childhood, while the composition resembles fragmented, cracked glass, symbolizing my many yet scattered memories. A clear PVC plastic layer, drawn with only the outlines, is placed over the painting, creating a doubling effect. This represents how memories can shift and alter as we grow up, emphasizing how time changes our perception of the past.

Denim Bike
Graphite
20" x 25.5"
2023
I created this Denim Bike using leftover pieces from my dad’s denim business, blending two key aspects of my life: childhood and design. I carefully warped, glued, and sewed various washes of denim onto my old childhood bike, bringing it back to life through fashion. The design is special to me, as it’s not just about the bike, but how fashion allows me to express myself and tell stories through every detail.
To add to the experience, I sketched the bike as a still life, showcasing my attention to detail in capturing the texture and intricate stitching. Using graphite, I focused on the varying washes of denim by layering different shades, while also bringing depth to the scene with the soft background of my yard, framed by nature. The sketch and the bike together reflect how much design influences me, not just as a creative outlet, but as a way to weave personal history and style into something tangible and meaningful.

Back Bend
Oil Paint
24" x 30"
2023
"Back Bend" is an oil painting featuring two figures: a yellow figure performing a strained backbend over a pink figure sitting beneath. Only the eyes are painted, highlighting their role as windows to the soul, bringing a haunting intensity to the piece. This focus draws out the darkness and emotional weight, amplifying the tension between the two figures. The pink figure appears trapped, almost relying on the figure above, adding tension to the scene. The dark, moody tones and the weight of the backbend create a sense of discomfort and emotional depth.

Inked Tree
Ink, Tape
18" x 24"
2024
"Inked Tree" is a study where I experimented with ink and wood for the first time. The piece features my friend sitting near a tree, and I used tape to block off sections, then applied watercolor ink on top to emphasize shadows and depth. I played with the ink to create a rich background and used intuitive line-drawing techniques for the figure, often without looking at the paper.

Y.O.L.O.: You Only Live Once
Oil Pastel
18" x 24"
2024
As the title suggests, “Y.O.L.O.: You Only Live Once” embodies life's boundless possibilities. In this illustration, my friend lies down with her arms covering her face, gazing away. The bold colors symbolize free will and the act of living in one's fantasy, unconcerned with the judgments of others. The encroaching black, swirling into the scene and surrounding her, represents the unyielding power she holds within herself and the clarity of her intentions.

My Ballet Flats
Charcoal
18" x 24"
2024
This charcoal still life features my two favorite ballet flats stacked with my glasses on top, which serve as my personal totem. I focused on capturing the texture of the leather by pressing hard with the charcoal, while also exploring the play of light and shadow. Both the ballet flats and the glasses hold deep personal significance, adding a meaningful layer to the composition.

Crayon Days 1/4
Film, Oil Pastel
10" x 10"
2024
"Crayon Days" is a four-piece mixed media collection where I rework old photos of my father. I alter the images by sewing through them, layering paper, and adding text, bringing each to life with my own touches. Seeing these photos for the first time sparked a curiosity about his past and how it connects with the father I know now. It deepened my understanding of my identity, as I explored the memories and emotions linked to him, finding pieces of myself reflected in his history.
